I hope everyone had a lovely holiday. Ours involved way too much eating but was really nice. I got Chris a trail camera which is really for me….the best kind of gift! We set it up yesterday so hope to get some good photos and maybe some good info for the guy who hunts on our property, Rich.
How does that tie to this post? Well Rich is the husband of my good friend, Becky. Becky saw this piece of glass at my house one day. I hadn’t decided what I was doing with it yet but she was interested in it.
Then I kind of forgot about it until Rich came to hunt one day and stopped in the house on his way out. He said that Becky saw a piece of glass that she keeps talking about and he wanted to get it for her for Christmas. That prompted me to get my act together and get a stand for it and then I had to keep quiet about it a hope that Becky didn’t ask again.
Here it is in it’s new home!
This is kiln carved glass. It’s made by cutting shapes from high temp fiber paper and arranging them on the kiln shelf. Two layers of glass are placed on top and then it’s fired. The glass melts around the shapes carving the image into the glass.
Here’s another kiln carved piece from the back. You can see that on this piece I had 3 layers of fiber paper to create the design. I don’t draw well but I can create shapes with my stencils or with my Go! Cutter.
The best part about Becky’s piece is that her son-in-law made this beautiful box for her. It’s one of those that is like a puzzle to open. It fits perfectly under the glass and creates the earth for the tree.
