Thrive Fabric Palette Projects

It's the first weekend of the Thrive fabric palette. I always love working with the new color palette and generally start off easy just playing with the way the fabric colors interact with each other. I saw a quilt in the April/May issue of Quilter's Newsletter that I liked and chose that one to play with today.

But first, if you are interested in purchasing the fabric you can get all of the information here. The quilt is called Let's Dance and is done scrappy with a black background. I wanted to see how it would look in my Spring colors.

Here's the block.

As I work with this palette you will see it often used with white as a background. I think these bright colros will look great with white. This version uses the Thrive

gradient.

Less white and adding in the lightest value of Blue Sky.

This one uses the Blue Sky gradient but add a little of the Lime green as a highlight.

This one uses the Abundance gradient and rotates the border blocks for a totally different look.

Add some sashing and change the coloring for the border.

In this version I made the block background dark and the block and sashing light. 

Back to the Blue Sky gradient with a dark background and light blocks and sashing.

 

Pendleton Fabric Palette Projects

This week I did a little clearing off my desk and unearthed my copy of volume 5 of Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks magazine. I decided that I  would look for a fun block to use for this week's EQ projects. This is the last week of the Pendleton fabric palette so if you wanted some now is the time to get it while it's on sale.

The block I am working with this week is called Facet-nating by June Dudley. It's on page 37 of the magazine. As with all of the blocks, thsi one is a 12" block. The center square is 7" finished so it would be a great block for some embroidered or applique blocks as the center. Because of the frames on the block I started with a horizontal setting with no borders.

I love the secondary patterns that you get with this block!

Here are a couple of other colorations.

Then I decided to see if I would like some simple sashing.

That's pretty cool. How does it look on point?

This is a great block. It looks good no matter what you do with it.

Pendleton Fabric Palette Projects

I have become fixated on designing quilts using multiple blocks. I have several that I am playing with. This particular one probably isn't really ready for prime time but I wanted to share something! These are, as always, done with the featured fabric palette, Pendleton.

Today I played with a lot of blocks but I ended up with these 3 in the designs that I'm sharing today.

Here are the designs and you will be able to tell that I was msotly playing with color and value placement to create borders and sashing.

 

Pendleton Fabric Palette Projects

I'm actually cheating a little bit this week. We had our sewing weekend with our quilt club and I was able to finish a veteran's quilt top and a Quilt of Valor top. I need a new charity quilt design so that's what I'm working with this week. The main requirement is that it be a simple block that I can put together kind of mindlessly.

I started the design using the Pendleton Fabric Palette. You can get all of the ordering information for the palette here.

I chose The Sickle block from Blockbase. It's simple enough with some half square triangles and 4-patches but can give some interesting patterns with color placement.

Here it is with a straight set. but with some blocks rotated.

This is interesting and, I think, has a bit of a modern look.

All of these layouts assume a 10" block with 5 blocks in 6 rows.

So I switched to an 8" block so I'd have better symmetry. The veteran's quilts are approximately 48 x 60. with an 8" block the layout is 6 x 8.

Oh, I like this one. The next charity quilts that I am doing are going to be in greens and tans so now I'm going to switch it up to those colors.

That would look kind of cool.

I can add some borders to get one to the QOV size.

It's Sunday and time for more EQ quilt images. I'm still using the Pendleton Fabric Palette and you can find more information on the fabric here. 

If you've been quilting for a while you may remember Doreen Speckmann. She published a great book called Pattern Play in 1993. It's all about making your own patterns with a few simple blocks. I love the book and have kept it in my library and I reference it often. It's still available as a Print on Demand book.

Today's design is based in a quilt in the book called Sally's Quilt. I've done 6 versions. What do you think?
