I am so glad that I participated in Jackie's Blogger BOM project. I didn't do the last block because I had already worked out my layout. The quilt as I made it is a perfect sofa quilt size. Jackie will have her layout posted on her blog October 25.

I made mine with feedsack fabrics and plain white muslin. I'm calling it Flora's Fans because it reminds me of my Great Grandmother. I quilted it with the Baptist Fan motif because that's what she used on her quilts.

There are some of her fabrics in the quilt. I am pretty certain that the pink here and the green in the block below are her fabrics.

The binding is scrappy feedsack fabrics. I really like the effect of scrappy bindings. This one is ready for the back of someone's sofa. It's going to be a soft and comfy snuggle quilt.

 

Hijacked by the scraps...again

You know it's an old story with me. I finished my Blogger's BOM quilt top and started clearing up the leftover fabrics and scraps. I woke up 3 days later......

I started by sewing together the small squares, rectangles and strips into crumb blocks. It was only a few weeks ago that I said I was done with crumb blocks but I just can't throw out feedsack fabrics!

I had 20 blocks and first thought I'd make a little baby quilt but then I found a stack of old sugar sacks in my sash and I came up with this.

When finished it will be about 40" x 50". I know it probably looks just dirty to you but I think it's pretty cute with the sugar sack prints spread randomly around it. 

Here you can see some of the prints a little clearer. This one will get some sort of simple quilting like parallel lines.

When I was picking up all of the tiny cut off bits I found one more block on the floor.

So I put it with the leftover sugar sack fabric and made this little round placemat.  This little table is attached to my favorite chair. This is where I watch TV, do applique and eat about half of my meals. I decided that I should have some placemats for this little table and this is my first one. Now when I spill some of my morning smoothie I will only soil the mat.

Finally I took all of the tiny bits and fused them (with Mistyfuse) to an 18" square piece of old fabric. I quilted it all down with diagonal parallel lines. I haven't made anything with this yet but I think it's destined to become postcards or notecards.

The feedsack projects are officially done for the time being!

Why is it that these scrap projects excite me more than a brand new project?

 

Blogger's BOM

Have you ever been behind and ahead at the same time? Well, that's my current state with the Blogger's BOM project. 

I am behind getting my blocks done. The host designer for this August is Amy from Amy's Creative Side. She designed this pretty block. I'm only about 3 weeks late getting them dome but they are finally done! When I started this project I had a specific use for the quilt in my mind. It's destined for one of the twin beds in the guest house. So I knew the size I needed and I've been working on layouts since the project started. I settled on the layout and completed the borders last month. I knew that I would have a couple of extra blocks but thought that I would edit out a couple once all of the blocks were finished.

Well, after I finished these 2 blocks I put all of them on the design wall and decided that I liked it very much as it was. First I thought I would sew together the horizontal rows and stop there but I kept sewing and during the 3rd quarter of the Steelers-Broncos game I had this!

I did make one big mistake with the sashing. It was supposed to be 1.5" wide but mine is, for some reason, 2". I didn't discover that until I started working on the borders but I simply adjusted the inner borders and everything worked out fine. I love this quilt and can't wait to quilt it. I will quilt it with Baptist Fans in honor of my Great-Grandma and then it will keep guests comfy in the guest house. It even has a couple of bits of fabric from my Great-Grandma's stash. I like it so much that it might just have to jump in front of the quilting line......once I get the back made.

 

 

Blogger's BOM

It's time for Block 11 in the Blogger's BOM series. The Blogger's BOM is coordinated by Jackie at Cantin Village Quilt Works and you can start any time. I am really enjoying this BOM series.

Not only did I finish my July blocks but I also got my borders completely done!

Here are most of the blocks I've made so far with 2 of the borders. I think I am going to love this quilt.

Blogger's BOM

I'm a little late but I am now caught up on my Blogger's BOM blocks.

Here's the block for July. It was designed by Pam Kitty Morning. This is the 10th block of 13 but it's not too late to start your own version. You can get all of the information about it here.

I have also finally settled on a layout. I know I said that last month but I just could not wrap my head around the odd sized inner borders to get that pieced border to work out right. I changed the pieced border from a 4" block to a 3" block and oriented the bar diagonally and I like this much better. I also narrowed the sashing and cornerstones which will require me to trim all of those pieces that I have already cut! It will be worth it because I like this much better and I will have lots of room to quilt some feathers.

This quilt should finish to 64" x 82" and will fit one of the beds in the guest house. (I'm keeping this one!) I don't have directions but if you like this layout for your quilt and you have EQ, you can download the EQ file here.

I set aside one afternoon and evening to work on this. It took me a couple of hours to settle on the layout before I could start piecing some of the border blocks. I like how this is going to look! 

When I packed everything away for next month I wrote some notes to myself so I will know where to pick up. My goal will be to complete the border blocks next month and the sashing in September so that I can put it all together when we get the last block in October.
