I'm really sorry I missed this post last week. I completely forgot about it. But I have actually been thinking about this design for a while. I really want to follow up on that shadow quilt concept that I've been working on. I liked the last one but I thought it would look better if it wasn't totally made of the block. It needed some place to rest the eye. Also, I remembered that there's a block that my Great-Grandmother used that I've been wanting to incorporate in one of my own quilts.
Oh, first I need to say that you can get the information about the Traditions Palette here.
The block that I'm working with is this one, Braced Star. My Great-Grandmother made a bunch of blocks in this design. Mom made them into a quilt and gave it to one of the relatives. I still don't have the design that I'm going to use but I'll walk you through my design steps. Ignore the colors. I'm not quite done with that either.
I started with a 6 x 6 layout and an asymmetrical layout. I like this and may come back to it.
But I needed symmetry.
I changed the colors and added some borders. Using a 9" block I needed it bigger. I can easily add a bunch of borders like this but maybe a border of blocks would be better.
Kind of OK but that's a lot of blocks.
Changed the colors and removed some blocks. I've got to start leaving myself some quilting room.
Switched out some blocks.
Changed colors to see if I liked it worked in a different color arrangement.
This is a little more open and I like it.
Added more border blocks back.
Now it's time for a break and some pondering. I'll be back next week with the next iterations. I'm eventually going to get something that I'll make and offer in a kit.
