It's that time again! If you are new here let me explain. We enjoy watching the birds around our property. Shortly after we moved here Chris put up Bluebird nesting boxes and in 2008 I started tracking the bird activity in them on the blog. We primarily get Eastern Bluebirds and Tree Swallows in the boxes but also get an occasional Chickadee or Tufted Titmouse nest. Here's a post that will show you the map of where the boxes are located on the property. In 2012 we fledged 15 birds, mostly Tree Swallows. In 2011 we fledged 22 and 19 in 2010. We are off to a bit of a late start this year so we will see how it goes.
Box 1 is off to a good start with 2 Bluebird eggs. Our Bluebirds almost always lay 5 eggs, one a day. I don't think we have ever seen feathers in the Bluebird nest so maybe we have attracted an upscale bird in this new box.
Wednesday night we were sitting on the back porch with our friends and had another visitor. This is a bird box that Chris mounted behind the house several years ago. The squirrels immediately took it over and chewed out a bigger hole. This little Flying Squirrel stayed there and watched us for about 2 hours. There was actually a second one in the box but it didn't show itself until it was too dark to get a photo.
