Someone asked for the instructions for making the navy scrap quilt so I thought I'd share them on the blog for anyone else. These instructions are going to be quite abbreviated because this quilt is so simple. All you really need are a few basic figures.
First you need to make a lot of crumb or mile-a-minute blocks. I'm not going to show how to do that but here are links to a couple of tutorials on the web. Basically you take all of your scraps and sew them together until you get blocks big enough to work with.
There's a PDF file in the first message of this forum that you can download and Bonnie at Quiltville also has instructions.
My quilt finished approximately 67 x 91 and the crumb blocks are cut to 9" (8.5" finished). For a quilt this size you will need 4 1/4 yards of background NOT INCLUDING THE BINDING. Buy extra if you want to bind the quilt in the same fabric.
The block is a basic square in a square block and finishes to 12" square and you will need 38 of these blocks. Cut the center crumb blocks to 9".
For the corners cut 6 7/8" squares of the background fabric and then cut those in half once on the diagonal. You will need 72 squares ( 144 triangles) to frame these blocks.
Next you need the half drop squares on the sides of rows 2, 4 and 6. The finished cut size of those blocks is 6.5" x 12.5"
I made mine by adding the background triangles to the left or right side of a crumb square and then cutting the block to 6.5" x 12.5" - removing the excess part of the crumb square.
You will need 6 of these half blocks.
Next assemble the blocks into rows.
Rows 1, 3, 5 and 7 are assembled with 5 large blocks.
Rows 2, 4 and 6 are made with 4 large blocks and 2 half blocks
Sew the rows to complete the center of the quilt. The border on this quilt was cut 3.5 and added to all 4 sides.
Easy!

Whoa! How cool is this. And friend, listen, I gotta say - this is easy to you but I don't actually know how to work out a simple square in a square block. You think I'm kidding? Have you ever seen me make one? NO! ...and certainly never any killer setting like this. Sheesh. I need to go back to quilt school.

I was wondering if you used a SinS or just large triangles. I have the SinS ruler & it makes quick work of those blocks. Thanks. I am definitely making one of these quilts this fall.

Thanking You ! I'll print 'em out and pull fabrics for our outing. It would be a hoot if I was ready to go beforehand! A first probably!

I am getting ready to go ahead and make this but stopped and decided to ask a quick question. Hope it isn't stupid. The Square in Square blocks. Are the points lost when you join blocks and rows. By looking at the single block in the pdf the point goes all the way to the edge. So there is no 1/4 inch seam allowance? I did not want to cut and goof up without asking first. I don't mind goofing up if I have all my ducks in a row. LOL..
