Although it's been two weeks since I posted this is still only a week's worth of stitching. I haven't gotten to work on it at all this week. I'm working on the sewing machine body now. I sure hope I can keep interested long enough to finish this beast!
My piece to share this week is this framed piece of crochet that was done by my maternal Great Aunt Della. I think she was the only one that did any crochet and they told me that she could crochet very fast and not even watch what she was doing. She lived from 1905 - 1974 and my family estimated that she made this doily around 1940. I had it framed about 15 years ago with acid free materials to preserve it. I think that Mom told me that her daughters said that there are not many of Della's crochet work left around. I'm glad to have this one.
Della died of some kind of cancer. I believe I remember being told that she had cancer for about 8 years and was hospitalized near death at least twice. The family would be called together and then she would come out of it and be fine for a while longer. I don't know how much of that story is true so maybe Mom will add a comment here to verify it. I'm not sure if I ever met Della but I do have this photo that was probably taken in the 1930's. I think she's saying "Take the darned picture so we can get on with the picnic."
Mom added information about Della's illness. She was diagnosed with stomach cancer and given 6 months to live. She lived 9 years with the cancer having gone through treatment twice, almost dying twice before dying at the age of 69.
