I made some progress on both of my QOV quilts! Thanks for all of the feedback on the "On the Double" quilt. It's nice to have some many people close by to help out with a different view. I talked to Mom and she does not have the two pieces that I am missing so we must not have made enough. The first thing I did was to make up more brown pieces so I could finish that one block. Mom, yours are going out in the mail tomorrow. The second thing I decided is that I do agree with the majority of the coments that those borders are not optimal but I'm going to go with them anyway. I already have them cut and it is a charity quilt - not for show. I think it will still be a pretty quilt and I will have learned another lesson. Lessons are good!
I organized the blocks in 4 different layouts. Do you have an opinion? Well, I know you have opinions! Do you want to share yours? I labeled each sample in the lower left corner.
I also made some progress on my QFAH quilt. I'm probably about a half hour behind. I think I should have finished all of my star points tonight but I have 6 sets left to make. I did construct 1 star to make sure I had cut everything right. These star point fabrics are from a big set of hand-dyed fabrics that I bought when Lunn Studios were going out of the dyeing business. Now they design some really awesome batik fabrics. I have used these fabrics a lot and I love them. I think they are fantastic for these star points.
Typepad had given us a new and improved editing interface. I think I'm going to like ot a lot but it's going to take a little adjustment!
Story for the day: I am terrified of snakes and had to kill one in my house about a year and a half ago. I was a mess. I called my Mama panicked (Chris was half way across the country) and drank about half a bottle of scotch before I got up the nerve to kill it. To make my humiliation worse, the snake was little. My Mom (and everyone else I know) loves to remind me of it. Today Mom killed the first snake at her new house - she has pointed out before that she killed a rattlesnake with a piece of glass once. Today she sent me this email:
Killed my first snake. It was a black snake about 2-3 ft long. I was planting Begonias around the light post and this soil is such you dig out a hold and replace it with good soil. I was taking it around back to throw over the hill and noticed something hanging out of the top of the propane tank. I had just cleaned it out. Wrens try to build nest and just make a mess. I sprayed it with 409 and it fell out of the top behind the tank. I got the Deer repellent made it come out so I could use the hoe and shovel. Dee held it down with the hoe and I hacked it with the shovel.
I knew you would want to hear all about this adventure.Lesson #1: Do not mess with my Mother or you will get a squirt of 409 in your face and your head chopped off.
Lesson #2: Never show Mom your weakness, she will never let you forget it!
My family is so much fun!

I vote for D. And although I'm not scared of snakes, I AM scared of spiders!!

Well had I known, I would have taken a picture of the small snake I killed last week and shared it with you.

A is my first choice; D is my second choice.
I once killed a snake by accident. I was 11 years old and ran down some stairs outside and felt a sickening squish beneath one foot -- a snake!

I like the layout from your post on the 19th best...second best is D.
I HATE snakes!

Miss Vicki, I like B, just to be contrary. But the most important thing I wanted to tell you was that my father killed a rattlesnake today - with an axe handle. He called me tonight and told me one of the dogs was barking like mad at something in the grass. Daddy found out that the dog had the snake's complete attention, so he snuck up behind it and struck with the axe handle in the coil of the snake. When he did so, the snake's head came up and as Daddy put it, "I gave it particular attention." He said it was a timber rattlesnake.
Okay, that is more than you need to know, but I thought that it was weird that your mother and my father both killed a snake on the same day.

I like A. I dont have a good snake story to tell - but i did scream and jump up and down when i saw a canetoad the other day - only to be told by children it was dead. so i looked pretty stupid - and they now enjoy telling everyone how pathetic i am now.

If I was giving it away I would do A. If I were keeping it I would do D.

First things first, I like choice A. Now, your mother's story made me laugh out loud! Killing snakes with 409 and deer repellant! I'm going to have to remember that! *snort snort*

lol! Your mom is a brave woman.
I vote for A. I'm not so sure I'm all that thrilled with the typepad improvements.

I vote for B and would love to understand the concept.

B is my vote. I would NEVER vote for snakes - big or small

i vote A. and i hate snakes!

D.
My friend, who lives in your area, killed a rattlesnake on her front step. She said she knew she had to, or it would hide. I was amazed at her courage; I think I would have gone into the fetal position and not have come out. But she put on her husband's boots and hacked it apart with a spade! Ugh. There are some advantages to northern Indiana--we're relatively snake-free.

My first vote in B, but I really like A too.
My cousins tortured me with a snake once...I hate snakes!

Hi Vickie,
I like them all but 'A' packs the most punch and stands out more to me, so that's my vote.
I enjoy seeing all the birds, their nests and eggs in your boxes. How fun!
I look forward to reading your article in Fibre and Stitch about how you did your metallic paint fabrics - I really liked the photos you posted of those!
By the way, black snakes are harmless and kill unwanted pests.

My first choice would be A and second choice would be D. Love the snake story!!!

D, then A. I can just see your tiny mom after that snake. I didn't realize 409 was a defense spray also! :)

I'd vote for B, second choice A.

Hi Vicki,
I liked A the best.
We of course have many snake encounters here in NC. Our yard front yard is like a big field, and the back is all woods, so we get everything. I think it is just fine for black snakes to eat mice and voles for us, but they better not jump out of a flowerpot, bird feeder, compost pile, or venture too close to my space. They also have destroyed baby birds inside the birdhouses.

I like A and D.
Hmm . . can't do much about family, can you?
Posted by: Summerset | May 22, 2008 at 04:01 PM
I like A and B...in that order.
As far as snakes go, all snakes are not bad but most people don't know a lot of difference. I have a pet snake that is a beautiful red color and has the pattern of Indian corn on her belly. She was as small as an earthworm when we got her and is around 5' long now (uncoiled) She is a domestic snake and loves to be held and carried around. Never strikes at anyone. A rattler is a different story though...handle me the shovel!

I think D and B in that order -- and hold the snakes!

I like A best.
Will took my camera out back the other day to take some pictures of a Garter Snake that he discovered. Shall I send you the pics?

I've been known to reward myself with scotch AFTER killing a spider. I might have to adopt your "fortify first" approach if I had to kill a snake.
Posted by: kim | May 23, 2008 at 06:43 PM
I like A better! I am not afraid of snakes. When I was a teenager I used to terrify my friends with water snakes whenever I found them. LOL!
