Week in review and the weekend list

What a day! One of the things that I love about my job is that I have a wide variety of responsibilities. Occasionally though it gets out of hand. What kind of filters do we need to put on our buildings to optimize the indoor air quality? Do we have all of the products named correctly in the script for the new hire orientation video? Can we add security policies to the scope of the Enterprise Risk Committee? Why does one unit out of nine want to fight implementation of the new email retention policy? Have I started writing the speech for my boss yet? Have I added the two new offices to our insurance policies yet? Ack! Carbon, not quite, sure, because they always do, uh no and no but I did add the motorcycle drivers. This is why we jokingly call our department "The Department of Unwanted Jobs". Remember the commercial "Calgon, take me away"? That's how I felt when I left work today. You think my weekend lists are long? You should see my work lists lately!

And someone please explain to me why I decided that it would be a good idea to listen to a book about drug addiction for my "entertainment"? I do like biographies and I don't know anything about addiction so I thought it might be educational. I suppose it is if I ever get over what an incredible self-absorbed ass the author is. Is it normal that even after 10 years of being clean he would still be looking to blame everyone around him for his addiction?  I'm not sure I'll make it thorough this one but I'm going to give it my best shot.

Feb_29_ruths_photo_albumSo imagine what a pleasure it was to come home to this beautiful card and photo book from Ruth! The photo book is made from some of her peace symbols that she made for her February TIF piece.  It washed away all of the stress from the week. Thank you Ruth!!! I'm having one of these in your honor. Tell your husband not to worry, there will be plenty left for him when you visit next year.

Thank you for all of the comments and feedback that I received on my February TIF piece. I agree, it needs more focus on the light reflections. I think there's paint and beading in the future for this piece. It's asked me for a few days of rest before I bother it again so I'll focus on a few other things before I come back and work on it some more.

Let's try a list for the weekend:

  • Get Chris' sauna assembled and installed. The sauna is his anniversary gift. I told him it requires two people to install. One to provide direction and one to do the manual labor. Want to guess which I am?
  • QOV quilting
  • Fibre&Stitch article
  • March birthday postcards
  • Shop sample and class description for the scrubs class

I might get most of this done!

February Take It Further

I can't believe it, I finished my February Take It Further challenge one day early!

Sharon's challenges have 2 components. The theme component for February is "what are you old enough to remember?". I posted some thoughts on that here. The color palette is this group of blues and taupes.

As I looked at the colors it reminded me of going to the beach as a child. That was a time when people generally took one week of vacation - a pack-up-the-car-and-go-somewhere-else vacation. We went to Long Beach, NC for our vacations. At that time (late '60's/early '70's) that beach was desolate! As a child I hated it. The kids wanted to go to Myrtle Beach, SC where every kid in the Southeast went on vacation. Of course today I would only go to the deserted beach so I can only imagine what kind of nightmare Myrtle beach with 4 kids would have been for my parents! So I did my TIF piece about the beach using something close to the assigned color scheme.

For my technique I went back to the cavern interpretation that I did for one of my triptych challenges in January.  This is made from batting, yarn and MistyFuse and that's about it! I made the base with fused layers of yarns. The base is cut into the diamond shapes and reassembled. I tried to get a light effect in the center going but my sand layer just didn't cooperate.

Feb_28_tif_february

My in-house critic and I agree that this isn't one of my big winners but I don't think I am done trying to make this technique work. It's too much fun to do! You are welcome to leave some honest critical feedback. I would really appreciate some honest opinions.

Now I get one day rest before I have to start thinking about the March challenge!

I'm not hiding

I'm simply not doing anything very blog worthy.

I'm working on this

Feb_28_tif_in_process

and this

Feb_28_floras_binding_in_process

Only one corner, and one long side left to do....and the label. I'm making the most progress on the binding because it's TV work and it's been a big TV week - American Idol and Project Runway.

Project Runway will be over next week when I feel certain that the fierce little fashion elf, Christian, will win. My personal favorite, though, is Jillian. Her garments are impeccable but I don't begrudge Christian the win. That kid has more talent in his pinkie finger than most of us have in our whole being. I've reached my my max tolerance level with Michael Kors and Nina Garcia though and would love to see new judges for next season. I'm glad this one will be over in another week.

Of course Idol is just getting underway and I've even convinced Chris to watch with me. My early favorites are David Archuleta and Ramiele Malubay. Both have very powerful voices. Luke is the one I'd want to bring home and please, America, vote this freak show off! Did you see the cat hair last night? What was she THINKING?!

I really am a little embarrassed that I am a reality TV junkie. Only a little though.

Weekend progress

The weekend isn't quite over but since I wanted to sit and take a break for a while I thought I'd take this opportunity to see how I'm doing on the list.

  • Make the backing for the Blue/Brown Chinese Coins QOV quilt Completed Thursday night
  • Make a new batch of soap Nope - guess that will move to next weekend. Don't worry, I will not be going around town stinky, I have plenty of soap!
  • Feb_24_fabric_painting Make some more metallic painted fabrics - Yes, lots! These are samples for an article that I'm writing on the technique for Fibre&Stitch. I'm very excited to be writing my first article!

  • Do two Monoprinting lessons. I got a new soft rubber brayer so I hope the rubbing lesson will go a little better this time Check!
  • Feb_24_tif_in_progress Start my February TIFF piece "Started" being the key word. There's lots more to do on this one!
  • Cut out a scrubs pattern for a class sample for the LQS - Not even close. But I might be able to do this one evening this week......or next weekend.
  • Finish quilting the second of my Great Grandmother's quilts and
  • Put the binding on the first of her quilts Check and check - I've already started the hand sewing part of the binding on the first quilt. And the feedback on the color for the binding on the second quilt is unanimous. It will be the green!
  • Get a QOV loaded on the longarm so I have something to work on in the evenings next week - The backing is loaded and the batting has been pre-shrunk. So I'm about 75% done loading the quilt. This one was made by Wanda. We are going to collaborate on some QOV quilts this year. I know that she sells a lot of her quilt tops too. If you are in the market to buy a quilt top you will not find any better than hers! They are perfectly pieced, flat and square!

All in all I'm kind of amazed that I got so much done but I didn't do any chores, I prepared exactly 1 meal other than breakfast and Chris has been out of town for the weekend. I admit though, I'm darned tired now!

Samples from the Monoprinting Class

I finally took some time to do some of my samples for the Monoprinting class that I am taking through joggles.com. I'm not caught up but I did do some things fro lesson 2 on rubbing. I've done rubbing with Shiva paintsticks so I decided to stick with the painting exercise and I'm glad I did. It was difficult to "get".

Feb_24_monoprint_washersI tried this last weekend with the Speedball hard rubber brayer and it did not go well at all. It seems that most people use the soft rubber brayer so that's what I used today. In the end I don't think it was the brayer, I think it was operator error!

I started by laying out lots of washers on this old plastic sign and worked on washer imprints on a piece of fabric in orange and yellows that I used to experiment with my metallic painting technique.

Feb_24_monoprint_orange_washers This is what I got. I learned:

  • 1. that I cant just slap paint on the roller and run it over the piece. That results in a big sloppy mess

2. The paint does need dry a little on the palette before the roller will pick it up and spread it smoothly,

3. I have to paint in slow strokes and in a small area at one time, and

4. It doesn't really matter what you do. If there are enough layers of paint the result will be interesting regardless of the original plan.

Feb_24_monoprint_lace_test The next things I tried were lace from an old shawl and some spaghetti pieces. This piece to the left was just a sample to see if the lace pattern would transfer. The blurry spot is a rose motif in the lace. This worked OK. The pasta did much better.

Feb_24_monoprint_green_lace_and_pasThis piece started as one of my failed metallic technique samples. I painted over it first with a metallic lilac paint on the lace and then used a black metallic over the pasta. That didn't turn out too bad.

Feb_24_monoprint_washers_goldsThis one started as a very yucky brown fabric. I rolled over 5 different layers of the washers starting with black metallic and adding a lighter metallic to each layer. I like how this turned out.

Feb_24_monoprint_leftover_paint I hate to waste paint so I used all of my leftover paints on this one. Not bad for a waste piece!

I need to get 2 pieces of glass or plexi to do my next sample....maybe next weekend.

February 23, 2008

I believe....

Feb_23_try_out_binding It's official, I believe in ghosts, spirits and guardian angels!

This is the second of Flora's (my Great Grandmother) quilt tops. I posted the other day about the fullness in this quilt. I finished it this morning. I think that she used the sashing to try to get the blocks back down to size. There were large wavy blocks throughout this quilt but I had no problems with it or the first quilt. I put on some Bluegrass music because I thought that might be the kind of music she liked and I quilted away. I swear that as I moved the machine across the pattern that Flora was there smoothing out the fullness. Feb_23_binding_on_maple_leaf The fabric just magically laid down as I quilted each arc. I didn't have any pleats and the thread never broke through out both quilts. I've never had a quilt go so well. I sure wish she would stay around and help me with all of my quilts!

Now it's on to the binding. I've gotten the binding sewn onto the first quilt and am working on the hand sewing step. It will be a good Idol project this week. I found that perfect solid green at The Quilt Man in Ashland, VA earlier this week. I though I would have trouble matching the green but I found it at the first shop I tried. Maybe Flora went shopping with me too!

I think the green is perfect for the maple leaf quilt but I'm trying to decide between the green or a yellow for the one at the beginning of the post. Which would you choose?

I'm making good progress on my weekend list. I'm off to meet Kim for dinner now but will return and work on my February TIF tonight. Tomorrow will be fabric painting day.

Quilt Show Report and Stash Enhancement!

I read on another blog Thursday night that the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Show was disappointing. Maybe I just like ALL quilt shows because we have a fantastic day. I actually thought it was the best Mid-Atlantic show ever. There's great variety in the styles of quilts and in the vendors. There's something for everyone here.

I didn't take photos of the quilts to share because I just don't feel right about sharing photos of works of others without permission. Of course the highlight for me was seeing Summerset's Midnight Garden. If you ever get a chance to see one of her garments at a show DO NOT MISS IT! Photos just cannot capture beauty and workmanship of her garments.

My Mom and her quilting friend were there escorted by my brother, Tim. It was his first (and probably last) quilt show! I think he was impressed but feels that he has checked that experience off of his list. My friend, Kim, went with me and we saw lots of our guild members and I met up with many of my sewing buddies from Hampton Roads. I was in a guild there for a number of years before moving to Richmond.

Feb_22_purchasesAnd there were purchases! So we will call this the weekly stash report too.

I found yarn on sale and bought some new yarns to use in my February TIF piece (and some for general inventory enhancement). I found 3 feedsacks that will be used to make sashing to set some blocks from my Great Grandmother's UFO box, silk pieces for my postcards and small art pieces and a supply of hot fix crystals for my next postcard swap project.

Also, earlier this week I bought 5 yards of solid 30's repro fabrics. 2 yards was for binding for my Great-Grandmother's quilts and the other 3 pieces were, well, just because they were pretty!

Total yards in (including the silks) about 15. Don't worry, as I finish my Great Grandmother's quilts in the next few weeks there will be lots of yards out.

I've finished my exercise requirements for the day and Chris is out of town fishing so it's time to get going on the perfect sewing day!

Weekend List

Yes, it is Thursday but my work day is done and I'm off work tomorrow! The Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival is this weekend so Kim and I are going to Hampton for the show tomorrow. But my weekend starts right now! Here's what I want to accomplish - it's a bit ambitious but I'll give it my best shot.

  • Make the backing for the Blue/Brown Chinese Coins QOV quilt
  • Make a new batch of soap
  • Make some more metallic painted fabrics
  • Do two Monoprinting lessons. I got a new soft rubber brayer so I hope the rubbing lesson will go a little better this time
  • Start my February TIF piece
  • Cut out a scrubs pattern for a class sample for the LQS
  • Finish quilting the second of my Great Grandmother's quilts and
  • Put the binding on the first of her quilts
  • Get a QOV loaded on the longarm so I have something to work on in the evenings next week

It's possible. It really is. By next weekend for sure!

Mother Nature's Anniversary Gift

Lunar_eclipse_for_blog_postChris and I were married 20 years ago today! Since he was educated as a meteorologist he loves all things in the sky. Wasn't it nice of Mother Nature to give us a lunar eclipse as an anniversary gift? When we went out to eat it was snowing so we didn't think that we would get to see the eclipse. Just as the eclipse hit it's peak the clouds cleared for us!

My camera isn't good enough for moon photos but this one (of 20) is the most acceptable.

Is easing easy?

Feb_18_quilt_fullness_before

When you are using the Baptist Fan quilting template you can ease a lot and it is easy! This is the second of my Great-Grandmother's quilts. The first one was reasonably flat and square. This one, not so much!

Feb_18_quilt_fullness_quiltedI suppose I could have taken it apart and cut the sashings down to size but I didn't feel like I should take apart her sewing. Instead I am trying to ease all of the fullness in as I quilt. I don't know how it does it but the Baptist Fan curves really help with the process. Here's that same area after quilting. The two arrows point to curves that still have a lot of fullness but I think I can steam some of that away after the quilt is off the frame. More of it will draw up when it's washed - by it's ultimate owner, not me! I got a few more rows done tonight so the end of the BF template is in sight!

My big treat for the night though was meeting Ruth and her sister, Rebekah, for dinner. Ruth lives in Whitefish, Montana and Rebekah lives here in Richmond. They co-own The Purple Pomegranate, a shop in Whitefish that specializes in handcrafted art. Ruth also does lots of lovely fiber art. She brought along a few things to share. I can tell you that the photo of her January TIF piece does not do it justice. It's lovely!

Ruth, it was great to meet you and Rebekah. Don't be surprised if you see me and Chris on your doorstep someday - I'll bring along a nice Macallan for your husband!

Weekend Roundup

Feb_17_floras_maple_leaf_quiltI've been busy all weekend but I just don't have much to show for it! Friday was incredibly busy and a long day at work. I spent Friday night getting ready for my class Saturday so I didn't even get a weekend list done! It's just as well because I wouldn't have gotten much checked off of a list. That's OK, not every day can go as planned!

I had another allergic reaction (dairy probably) Friday night so I was a little worried about my class Saturday but I made it and had two great students for a beginner sewing class. Both were real beginners and basically had not sewn before. We had a great day and they each finished an apron. One of the students was a lovely 11 year old girl. I think she's going to properly obsessed with sewing! We had a good laugh when the other student and I were talking about our love for vintage ric rac. The young girl asked how old it was to be vintage. We told her probably from the 40's - 60's.......she said, "oh, I thought it would be from the 80's".  LOL! Perspective. It was a fun day and I think we have two more people who will take up sewing as a hobby. Saturday night I was exhausted and did nothing!

Today worked out much better. I finished the baptist fan quilting on one of my Great Grandmother's quilts and got the second one loaded. I will tell you, I'll be happy to see the end of the baptist fan template for a while! I started binding the quilt and decided that the color I picked for the binding is ALL WRONG! So now I have some lovely peach colored binding for a future project and some shopping to do for new binding.

I also attempted some fabric painting for my second monoprinting lesson. That didn't work out so well...I'll try again next weekend.

The new week is starting off great. Tomorrow I am meeting Ruth and her sister for dinner and then Friday is the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival. My friend, Kim, and I are going to spend the day there Friday. That will be a great way to kick off the weekend. Maybe I can get the baptist fan quilting done this week - that would be another great way to start the weekend!

Stash Report

Boring again. Nothing in. Nothing out. I'm not counting any of my backing or other fabrics that I have used recently until the projects are actually done. You can bet that I will have some stash additions next Sunday though! I can't go to a quilt show without buying something - that would be really wrong.

Have a great week!

Home from Baltimore

Feb_14_eastern_phoebe_2 As with the December visit to Baltimore, the weather was dicey. This photo was taken in front of the house just before we left. This Eastern Phoebe was puffed up against the cold wind. When we got to Baltimore the streets and sidewalks were icy but it was worth the risk and the cold. James_recital We brought my nephew loads of goodies and got them all unloaded before his recital (photo on right) at 7:00. We had dinner after the recital and I had an allergic reaction to something dairy in the food (yes, we asked all of the questions, I think it was probably an accidental tiny bit of cheese). That made Wednesday start off a little slow but we eventually got ourselves over to the National Aquarium. If you have never been and get the opportunity, don't miss the National Aquarium. We had not been in YEARS - maybe 15 - 20 - and it's grown. They have 3 buildings now: the aquarium, the dolphin house and the glass pavilion with an exhibit of Australian wildlife - birds, reptiles and fish. My favorite part is still walking down through the inside of the multi-story aquarium. I took lots of photos and all but a few were total crap. It's really difficult to get a photo of a moving fish with a zoom lens. Here are a few that turned out OK.

Frog

Tropical_fish

Lizard

Tropical_fish_2

Puffin

Feb_14_grouper

That last one is my favorite! After the aquarium, Mom and I tried to go to a bead shop right around the corner from the school, Beadazzled. James_and_grandma The smell of fragrances and incense was so strong that we couldn't stay. In just a few minutes my face broke out in hives. All was not lost though because there was a fantastic optical shop right next door! Mom and James helped me pick out some new frames (I have at least 5 pair of glasses). Then we got to see James' new custom-made trombone before heading to our pre-concert non-allergic dinner. The concert was great. We are so impressed with the talent in this group of 18 - 20 year old musicians. Here's a photo of James with his Grandmother after the concert.

We finished off the trip with a pit-stop at IKEA so that Mom could look at cabinets for her sewing room. It was a great trip. Travel always messes with my health and I usually feel kind of crappy for a couple of days but some trips are worth it. This was one of them!

Now I have to get into my reader. The bloggers have been busy the last few days and I have over 350 items to catch up on!

February 11, 2008

More bird photos

I'll be off line for a few days. We are heading to Baltimore tomorrow to the nephew at school. He has a recital tomorrow night and Wind Ensemble concert Thursday. We're going to the National Aquarium Wednesday. I hope they let me take photos there. Here are a few more bird photos that we captured this weekend:

Downy_woodpecker_2

Downy Woodpecker (male and female) I hope I can get better quality photos than these at another time.

Junco

Dark-eyed Junco - these birds will migrate north to Canada soon

Rose_breasted_nuthatch

Red-breasted Nuthatch - this one is fast at the feeder and is hard to capture. Chris finally got this photo today.

Tufted_titmouse

Tufted Titmouse - I finally for a good photo of this little guy.

Whitethroated_sparrow

White-throated Sparrow - pretty much the only sparrow that I can easily identify.

Song_sparrow_maybe

One of the things I want to use the photographs to help me identify the sparrows. I think this one is a Song Sparrow but I'll take any feedback if you have a better identification.

See you in a few days!

The weekend wrap up and stash report

I had 4 goals for the weekend:

I got it all done and a little extra. You saw the sun printing and the metallic painting yesterday. I even got in some unplanned dyeing.

Today I got through about half of one quilts on the frame getting the baptist fan treatment. I love how it's turning out! The quilt doesn't exactly have flat and square block but somehow the baptist fan set everything perfectly. I've decided that it's nearly a perfect quilting treatment. I'll share photos when it's done.

Feb_10_brown_blue_coins_top_3Here's the completed Chinese Coins quilt top. The tutorial for it is here. I think it will be a nice QOV quilt. I decided to pull something from my stash for the backing. The closest thing I had was a blue on ivory reproduction print.  Feb_10_dyed_backingTime to get the dyes out again! You can see in the photo on the right the proginal fabric to the right and the results of the dyeing in the middle. I love having my dye supplies out and ready to use at any time. I was doing laundry at the time so I put the bin on top of the dryer while it was drying and I thin that helped the color set.

Stash Report

I'm not counting any of this as stash reduction yet - not until I have a completed quilt! So for this week I only have purchases - 10 fat quarters. I couldn't resist a few more pieces of Floragraphix at my LQS.

Feb_10_stash_report

February 09, 2008

It was a day full of color

Feb_9_triad_dyed In addition to the sun printing, I also did some dyeing and painting today. I had not planned to do any dyeing but then I read a post today from Brenda on triad dyeing and wanted to give it a try. I wanted more "rustic" colors so my red is a blend of fuchsia and light red, the yellow is gold and the blue is a mix of kelly green and turquoise. Usually I squish my fabrics really well in the dye and soda ash mix so that I get even dyeing. This time I wanted it mottled so I did not mix in the soda ash well. I really like the effect.

These next three are different folded effects. The pink and purple one is my favorite.

Feb_9_folded_dyed_1_2

Feb_9_folded_dyed_3_3

I even had time to do some more metallic painting. These pieces are now set out to cure until next weekend.

Monoprinting Class - Sunprinting

Feb_9_sunprinting_the_process I am taking Susan Sorrell's Monoprinting class at joggles.com. The first lesson is on sun printing. I've done sun printing before. The last time was during craft week last fall. I wasn't sure I was going to get to do more this weekend but today turned out to be mild and sunny with no wind.

Feb_9_sunprint_pine This one was the last one I printed and it's my favorite. I lied together the leftover paints (DyeNaFlow) from the other 3 prints and used cutting from a pine tree for the mask. I'll have to do more with the pine needles, I really like the effect.

Something weird happened in the paint. When I mixed in the leftover yellow into the green it separated into tiny speckles. I love the effect and I know I will probably never get that to happen again.

Feb_9_sunprint_buttonsThe orange one is done with buttons. I did some of these last year when I was experimenting. I have a large bag of cheap buttons that I use just for these projects. I think I'd like to do one with thread drizzled over it.

Feb_9_sunprint_pasta_2The purple/yellow one is printed with pasta. Usually I just toss the pasta around on the piece but this time I tried to arrange some of it specifically in the yellow areas. I really like pasta as  a mask. It's cheap and there are so many types of pasta for lots of different textures.

Feb_9_sunprint_asthmaI once took apart my used asthma inhaler to see how it works. That gizmo has a lot of parts and some neat gears. I've been saving the parts ever since. I used all of the parts on this piece along with salt. It turned out OK but some of the inhaler pieces really don't work for this technique. I'll save only the good parts from now on.

These were fun, I'll have to do more of them some day.

Another childhood story and the weekend list

I thought my brother, Tim, might post his memories. Let me tell you, he has a much better memory! He mentioned one incident that's actually worth sharing. It wasn't really an early memory as I was a senior in high school, but it's funny anyway.

The summer between my junior and senior year in high school we moved "across the tracks" to a better neighborhood and a larger house.  My bedroom was on the second story at the front of the house. There was a covered porch on the side of the house. We could climb out the window and walk on the roof of the porch. Apparently the boy that lived across the street has some kind of crush on me. I think my older brother, Eddie, knew it but I didn't. I just wondered why the freak was always trying to catch a ride to school with us.

I liked to sleep without the windows covered because I liked for the sun to wake me. I didn't even have curtains. (I still don't but no one can see in my windows now.) One night I rolled over in bed and there was someone standing on the porch roof trying to get into my bedroom window. It didn't take long to realize it was the boy across the street but it still scared the begeezus out of me. I slithered out of bed, got into the hallway and ran to get Dad. Where was he? On the toilet!

Dad got himself together and went outside a yelled at the boy. The boy was so drunk that he FELL OFF THE PORCH ROOF! LOL! He had carried a ladder across the street to get up to the porch. I don't really know what happened after that and how Dad dealt with him because I was kicking Eddie out of his bed (he had curtains) and made him sleep in my room until we could get some curtains installed.

I have always attracted the best sort of men. Good thing I captured Chris in a weak moment otherwise I'd probably be a prison bride or something.

As for the weekend in my gloriously boring life:

  • finish piecing the blue/brown Chinese Coins QOV quilt top
  • work on the baptist fan quilting on my Great Grandmother's quilt
  • do some more metallic fabric panting
  • weather permitting, do some sun printing for my Monoprinting class

Who is going to be at the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Show in Hampton in a few weeks? I'll be there Friday and will be doing white glove duties from 2 - 4 on Friday. If you are going to be there look for me - I'll be wearing my red glasses.

Take It Further - February

Sharon B has posted the challenge concept and palette for February. The challenge concept is a questions this month:

What are you old enough to remember?

And the color palette is

I'm going to work with the palette this month for sure and I'm already working an idea in my head but the questions is intriguing and I thought I'd at least spend some time thinking about it.

If I think about the question as "what are my early memories" I'd list:

  • My earliest memory is of my parents talking about the President being shot. I could tell by the mood that it was bad but I didn't know who the President was and what it meant to me.
  • I remember when the Jackson 5 became popular and realizing that we are not all created equal. Michael Jackson and I are about the same age. I was riding a yellow school bus to a rural elementary school and he was touring the world because he was born with real talent. That was the point where I realized that I needed to work hard to get my tour out of that town. I didn't have that talent.
  • I remember how excited my Mom was to get carpeting in her dining room. I remember me and my brothers setting it on fire (near the door), melting some of the carpet, cutting away the melted parts and being very careful for the next year or so to keep the doormat over the spot.
  • I remember my Mom being pregnant with my 3rd brother. Everyone wanted a girl except me. I've never prayed in my life like I prayed for that baby to be a boy. he was born the day before my 8th birthday and I was very excited to have a baby to care for. I quickly learned that babies are a lot of work and that they turn into PITA toddlers. I am thankful that the baby was a boy and that I was old enough to learn that I have absolutely no maternal instincts!

Which led me to thinking about "what do I remember from my childhood that my youngest brother wouldn't remember". This is a conversation that I've had with a friend of mine recently who is also the oldest of 4 children. Depending on the age gap and the dynamics of the family, the oldest and youngest children can have totally different childhood experiences. I was talking to Mom recently and we thought about some of the things that I remember that David probably does not. My middle brother, Tim, reads my blog so I'd be interested to know what of this stuff he remembers. Here are some of the things that I think I remember that David does not.

I remember Great-Grandma Rakes, the quilter. I believe she died when David was about 1 year old. I don't remember her liking children very much but I have vivid memories of seeing her sew pieces of fabric together for her quilt tops. I was fascinated.

I remember my Granddaddy Dove. He actually got a job at my elementary school as a janitor so that he could see me and my brother Eddie every day. My Willie is named for him.

I remember when we actually spent time with my Dad's parents. I'm pretty sure that had cut back pretty dramatically by the time David arrived on the scene. Things started going downhill when they told my parents that they only wanted to spend time with their Granddaughter but not their Grandsons.

I remember our babysitter. We called her Mama Nowlin. Apparently we were cruel enough at some point to actually just refer to her as "Mama". Our real Mama wasn't too please with that so the babysitter's name was modified to "Mama Nowlin". She lived in a small 4 room house. It only had running water in the kitchen sink. We had to use an outhouse (I'm sure David doesn't remember that!), she sometimes cooked on a wood stove in her kitchen, she sewed on a treadle machine and she loved her "stories". We got quite an education watching "Days of Our Lives" with her every day. I also remember watching a show called Dark Shadows and Perry Mason at her house. She also had diabetes and died on Christmas Eve when I was 12.

I remember a Ford Falcon station wagon that it seemed that we had forever. Eddie and I were upset when they were going to get rid of the car. We wanted them to leave it in the backyard so we could play with it. Yes, we were rednecks even as young children.

I remember the distress of a Christmas tree with only blue lights. From Dad's point of view, blue was the only color in the world. For years every car was blue (including the Ford Falcon) and for a few years (seemed like forever), the Christmas tree had only blue lights. I'm still scarred.

I remember Mom teaching us about economics. If we bugged her to buy something for us she would pull out the checkbook, show us the balance and ask if she should spend the money on whatever toy we were asking for or food. She said that over time that we developed a habit of asking for something and telling her that it cost "x plus tax". Yea, Mom, we got the message.

I remember Hurricane Agnes in 1972. It was probably the most traumatic experience of my youth. I didn't think the rain would ever stop. The flooding in our town was horrible and we had 4 or 5 feet of water in our basement. After the water receded everything in our basement was covered in mud and we had about 3 feet of white sand covering the entire backyard. But the worst part were the people driving up and down the road in the middle of the flood just to gawk at the damage. Here we were working with the neighbors to try to save things in our homes and people were out sightseeing. It was one of my first experiences being disappointed with the behavior of adults. For years I would get anxious during heavy downpours. Give me a thunderstorm any day.

Mostly I remember a time when we could go on all day adventures into the woods and no one worried. In the summer we didn't have a bunch of organized activities so we could actually PLAY with the other neighborhood kids. Dad would out up a tent in the backyard and all of the neighborhood kids would sleep over - until Dad started telling his ghost stories.

I remember when I first discovered Louisa May Alcott books, the train under the Christmas tree, a dog named Snoopy and a cat named Pounce.

Well, that was fun! So Tim, what do you remember? I need to call David and compare notes. Eddie, my oldest brother is only a year younger than me. We remember everything together because we did everything together, including making misrepresentations to our parents when we were teens. Mom is still a bit bitter over that.

If you stuck with me through this long boring walk through my childhood you deserve a gift. So here's a shot of today's sunset.

My funny photo of the Tufted Titmouse - I'll get a better one on another day but I thought this was really cute! And to show that I can take photos of very tiny things too, here's one of the ladybugs that infest homes in this area at this time of year. There's no keeping them out so we learn how to live with them - and they are harmless and cute.

February Birthday Postcards

Feb_5_birthday_postcards

One of these will go to my Aunt and one to my friend in Los Angeles. They may not look like birthday cards but I've been wanting to use these trees for a while. They are from some fancy ribbon that I bought last year. The background is some of my metallic painted fabric. The trees are woven across the width of the ribbon and alternate between these two for the length of the ribbon. I think they are really pretty. And the card couldn't be complete without some ric rac! These will go in the mail this weekend. I'm a little in shock that I got them done early!

Stash Control Report

I have a quick report this week and it's dangerous of me to post it now since I will be at the LQS for 2 hours this afternoon! If I buy anything today I suppose I'll add it to my report next week.

I did buy fabric this week.  I bought 2 yards of the Floragraphix that I used in the second apron that I made yesterday. It didn't even make it into the stash! I also restocked solid black fabric and bought 5 yards. I think that was about $38.

In addition to the 2 yards used for the Floragraphix aprons, I used 3 more yards for the 2 other aprons. So 5 yards in, 3 yards out. Not bad!

I also sold the remianing longarm things that I put up for sale. So for the month I'm still way ahead with more money in than out. That will not hold. The Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival is in a few weeks!

A few aprons

Feb_2_full_apronI a teaching a beginner sewing class at Quilting Adventures in a few weeks (and again in April) and I wanted to make some new samples. I cut them out last night in about an hour and a half and made them all tonight in about 3 and a half hours! They are all from Retro Aprons by Cindy Taylor Oates. They are all really cute patterns and terrific for a beginner sewer. I made the first one from some stash fabrics that I've had for about 4 years. I also have a 3rd fabric of cups in this same group. I think they are really cute fabrics and great for an apron.

Feb_2_purple_apron  This purple and green one is made from fabric that I bought this week. It's a new line at Quilting Adventures called Floragraphix 2. The whole line is beautiful and I wanted to make one of the samples in something not vintage or retro looking. It's quite a classy apron don't you think? I'm pretty proud of myself for not buying more than enough fabric for this apron.

Feb_2_green_apron This last one is made to look truly retro from 30's reproduction fabric and vintage ric-rac trim. It's a very tailored apron with 6 pleats.

These were a lot of fun to make. I think they would be great gifts and they are a great use of stash because most of them use 1 yard or less pieces and offer lots of opportunities for mixing prints.

Now I can just hope that some people sign up for the class!

I LOVE my new camera!

I really love digital cameras. You can take 100 photos and immediately delete the 99 crappy ones without having to wait for film to be processed to toss the bad ones out. I had some good light this morning so snapped a few lot of photos of my birds feeding. I've weeded out the few best ones. All except the first one were taken from INSIDE my home - through glass. Not bad! I had a 75-300 lens from my old camera and I'm so glad to be able to use it again.

TGIF in a big way!

What a week. There's no way that a 2-day weekend is long enough. This week feels like it has been a month. I work at home 2 days a week and both days this week brought major internet outages. I am able to get tons of work done when I work from home - except for this week. Now I am way behind.

Then the wife of the President of our company died Monday. She had been sick for about 13 month. There was an emotional funeral Wednesday and the company mood has been sad all week. On top of that I've had 2 migraines douring the week and it poured rain most of the day today.

5:00 this evening couldn't get here fast enough! Everything made a turn for the better when I walked out of the office and saw that the rain had stopped. Then I cam home and found that my anniversary present had arrived! I've been wanting the digital Rebel camera for several years but it's just now getting into the price range I was willing to pay. Our anniversary isn't for 19 days but I'm opening it today! Maybe I can get some cool bird photos this weekend. Speaking of the weekend, here's my list:

  • Make some aprons as class samples for my beginner sewing class, Retro Aprons, at Quilting Adventures.
  • Help Chris add insulation to the attic. I have to work the blowing machine while he sprays the insulation. I get to wear my respirator!
  • Take the Art Quilt Workbook class Sunday
  • All of the rest of my time will be spent as the mood strikes me. I might work on the Chinese Coins QOV, longarm quilting the Baptist Fans, do some metallic fabric painting, work on my February Take It Further Challenge ideas, make some February birthday cards, work on my own Triptych Challenge piece or just watch the birds and take photos with my new camera. I decided that this weekend has to be fluid.

I have received my Triptych challenge piece from Judy but I'm going to hold off showing it until I have all three together and done. I hope you get to do whatever you want this weekend!
